When filling in Task 2, please use the transactions date where available.
In task 3, use the period’s end date.
In each journal, there is a column for reference. You will need to choose the appropriate reference for each transaction. We provide you with the options as follow:
- The numbers: these are the cheque numbers that you can choose from.
- Cash: Cash transactions
- DD: Direct Debit from the bank account
- DC: Direct Credit to the bank account
- EFT: EFTPOS transactions
- OB: Online Banking transactions the firm makes.

When filling in Task 2, please use the transactions date where available.
In task 3, use the period’s end date.
For excellence you will need to have correct closing balance on the bank reconciliation.
The closing balance will be made up of closing bank statement, deposits and withdrawals not on the bank statement. Thus, if you see the deposits and withdrawals are marked correct and get the closing balance incorrect, it means the closing bank statement is incorrectly entered.
For the bank ledgers: if the Dr and Cr transactions are in the same date, then you can enter either one first – they are interchangeable and you will not be penalised for it.
For Bank reconciliation, Under “Less withdrawals not on the bank statement”, 2 transactions are also interchangeable.
acc 1.2 task 4
In the ledger, the running total should not be a negative number. You should keep it as a positive number and then change the Dr or Cr sign.
For example: the running total is $100(Dr). There is a new transaction of $200(Cr) to be added. Mathematically, the balance will become -$100. In accounting, the balance will become $100(Cr)
acc 1.2 task 5
It’s a liability. Normally there are 2 options:
- Have separate ledger accounts for GST received (which is a liability as you need to pay back to the IRD) and GST paid (which is an asset as you will get the refund back from IRD).
- Have combined GST clearing account as in this assessment. In this case, it should be a liability. The reason is that when a business is a going concern, they should aim at creating revenue and profit, thus paying GST.

This is all done in the sim. There is a split screen for it, and a copy of the CRJ and CPJ will be shown on task 3 as a reference. You can also print out a hard copy if required.
There is a video help on task 3 of Doyle’s Designers showing you how to do it. Students have a working space next to the the table to put their notes into (example: what transactions have already been recorded, which transactions need to be updated, which transactions are not showing on the bank statement, etc).
No. This is a new requirement by NZQA in the new standard. Bank reconciliation needs to relate to journal entries and is not an optional task. This is a major change to the old standard and students receive an additional 1 more credit for learning this.
When starting a new task, teachers and students will have to click on the “Start a New Exercise” button in the main screen to start their Task for Doyle’s Desingers and Click “Start Task 1-3″ for Pete’s Plumbers.
The best option is to save your work, logout and then log back in.

Student FAQ
You can use the built-in “sum” function to calculate totals. You can also use the mouse to select all the cells you want to add up, and the total will be displayed in the bottom right corner of the screen.
This generally occurs when you have tried to open a sim that is already open. To fix it, either look for the sim already opened, or restart Excel and open the sim again by login.
As our program is an online application, it requires constant internet connection. If your internet connection drops whilst you’re trying to open an exercise, you will get this error.
To solve: check your internet connection, and check under the “Network” tab on the client. If “Offline” is ticked, click it to go back online. If you still have problems, try using a better connection.
If you are not quite finished your work, use the save button located at the bottom of the page. When you next login, your previous answers will be loaded onto your sim for you.
After you complete each set of tasks, click on the submit button (when it shows) to get your answers submitted. Once you have finished working on the whole sim, make sure you submit your latest answers, and then close down Excel.
You will need to install the Schoolsims software in your home computers. Immediately after this, you can start practising from home. You will need to use the same login details as you use at school. Please check this for more detail.
First, save your work.
Then close down excel.
Open Excel again.
Login once more.
This is a bug that is caused by the live chat feature and that our technicians are aware of.
1. The students login to a sim (same as in 1.2) to see the questions and download the MYOB file. If not we can provide printout of the questions and email you the MYOB file.
2. They enter everything into MYOB (you will need computer lab time here regardless whether you are using the sims or not)
3. We have videos to tell students how to export their work from MYOB into a csv file, then import it into the sim, and the marking happens there, you see their mark immediately (similar to 1.2) so there is no need to send this back to us.
4. Within the sim, you will need to fill in the white cells next to each transaction with the order you answered the questions. If you answered them all in order, then you enter the numbers in order down the page, otherwise you will need to double check your order by comparing your transaction journal to the tasks. It’s important your order is correct as this is how the sim will match your answers up with the solutions to mark.
